| History |
Each of the seven provinces had one vote in the States Genneral. The deputies had an imperative instruction from the provincal states and were obliged to consult their principals. Since 1593 the Town of The Hague was the permanent place of assembly. The States General were responsible for the regulation of relations with foreign powers, were entrusted with the supreme direction of finance and defense and had the supreme supervision over the government of the colonies. The Dutch East and West India companies received their charters from the States General. |
